Dell PowerEdge R630: Dense Compute in One Rack Unit

The PowerEdge R630 puts the same silicon as Dell's 2U R730 into a single rack unit: two Socket R3 processors, up to 22 cores each, and 24 DIMM slots. Forty-four cores and 88 threads in 1U is still a serious amount of compute per unit of rack, and for anyone whose constraint is rack units, or who is working in a cabinet that is already full, that ratio is the whole argument.

What actually fits in one rack unit

The R630 is a dual LGA 2011-3 platform for Xeon E5-2600 v3 (Haswell-EP) and v4 (Broadwell-EP) processors, up to 145 W TDP each. Memory is 24 DIMM slots — four channels per processor with three slots per channel — running DDR4 at up to 2400 MT/s with v4 parts. Sixty-four gigabyte LRDIMMs across all slots reach 1.5 TB. As with any dual-socket board, a single-processor build only lights up half the slots, so a one-CPU R630 has half the memory ceiling and half the channels.

Cooling is handled by up to seven hot-plug fans, and power by redundant hot-plug supplies at 495 W, 750 W, or 1100 W. Size the supplies against processor TDP and drive count rather than defaulting to whatever came in the chassis; a pair of 145 W CPUs with ten drives and a cache-equipped RAID controller is a different load than two 85 W parts and four SATA disks. The chassis is about 29 inches (734 mm) deep without the bezel and just under 30 inches with it, so standard four-post racks and normal rail depth apply — no special planning needed.

Front-end options

The R630 shipped in four drive configurations: 8 x 2.5", 10 x 2.5", 24 x 1.8" SSD, and 4 x 3.5". On the 10-bay backplane, up to four bays can be wired for NVMe Express Flash drives, which is the practical way to get low-latency storage into this chassis. The 24 x 1.8" SSD configuration is the one most people forget exists; it was aimed at read-heavy flash tiers and remains an unusual number of independent SSD devices for 1U, though the drive form factor limits your replacement options.

RAID is handled by a PERC H330, H730, or H730P in a dedicated mini-monolithic slot, so the storage controller never consumes one of your PCIe slots. The H730P carries 2 GB of cache with battery backup — check the battery on any used unit, because a failed pack drops the controller to write-through and takes write performance with it. For hypervisor boot, this generation uses the internal dual SD module (IDSDM) rather than the M.2 BOSS card that arrived with Dell's 14th generation, so plan boot media accordingly.

What you trade for the height

Expansion is the obvious cost. The R630 offers up to three PCIe 3.0 slots, all low profile, and the riser configuration you have determines whether you get two or three. There is no full-height, full-length slot, which rules out most accelerators and some older HBAs and tape controllers. If your build needs more than a RAID controller, a NIC, and one add-in card, this is the wrong chassis.

The network daughter card slot offsets some of that. The rNDC takes 4x1GbE, 2x10GbE plus 2x1GbE, or 4x10GbE options in a dedicated connector, so networking does not eat one of your three slots. In a three-slot riser configuration, an HBA in one slot still leaves two free.

The other trade is acoustic and thermal. A 1U chassis moves air through a shallow duct with small, fast fans, and it is audible in a way a 2U is not. This is a data-center or dedicated-room machine, not an office-closet server. Top-TDP processors combined with a full drive complement will also push fan speed and power draw up, so density has a real ceiling here.

iDRAC8 and lifecycle management

Management is iDRAC8 with Lifecycle Controller. The Enterprise license unlocks virtual console, virtual media, and vFlash; Express is the base tier. As with any secondhand server, verify which license the unit actually carries — the controller hardware is always present, the entitlement is not. Lifecycle Controller handles firmware updates without a running operating system, and racadm covers scripted configuration if you are provisioning more than a handful of machines.
