Running VMware ESXi on Refurbished Servers: What to Check First

Refurbished servers and VMware have a long, mostly happy history — the majority of the machines on the secondary market spent their first life running exactly this hypervisor. But ESXi is stricter than a general-purpose OS about hardware support, and the rules tightened with recent releases. Checking four things before you buy prevents nearly every unpleasant surprise.

1. CPU generation vs ESXi version

VMware retires CPU generations aggressively. ESXi 7 dropped many early Xeons; ESXi 8 requires roughly Skylake-SP (first-generation Xeon Scalable) or newer to install without warnings, and flags even some of those. In practical terms: a 14th-generation Dell (R640, R740) or HPE Gen10 runs ESXi 8 comfortably; 13th-generation and Gen9 machines are best paired with ESXi 7, which remains fine for labs and internal workloads. If your goal is the newest vSphere on supported hardware, start at Gen10/14G.

2. NICs: the classic purple-screen source

The installer needs a supported network driver or it will not proceed. Intel X520/X710 10GbE cards and the built-in Broadcom/Intel 1GbE LOMs in Dell and HPE servers are safe. Very old add-in cards and consumer Realtek chips are not. If a listing shows an unusual NIC, check the VMware Compatibility Guide against your target ESXi version — it takes two minutes and settles the question.

3. Boot device rules changed

ESXi 7 and 8 want a durable boot device: a 32GB-or-larger SSD, a BOSS card with mirrored M.2 modules on Dell, or a proper RAID1 pair. SD cards and USB sticks — the standard approach in the ESXi 6 era — are deprecated because the newer releases write logs and OSDATA continuously. A refurbished host that originally booted from dual SD should get a small SSD added to the build; it is a cheap line item that removes a whole failure class.

4. Storage controller mode

For VMFS datastores on local disks, a proper hardware RAID controller with cache (H730P, P440ar) is the comfortable path — ESXi has no ZFS, so passthrough mode buys you nothing unless you plan vSAN. For vSAN, the rules invert: disks must be presented raw, the controller must be on the vSAN HCL, and you should treat the HCL as law rather than advice.

Sensible refurbished ESXi hosts

The HPE DL380 Gen10 and Dell R740 are the default answers: two Scalable sockets, 24 DIMM slots, ESXi 8 support and abundant parts. One tier down, the DL360 Gen10 and R640 do the same in 1U. For an ESXi 7 lab where budget rules, the R630/R730 and DL360/DL380 Gen9 remain excellent — just accept that their supported-version ceiling has arrived.

Memory and licensing deserve a final word: vSphere licensing has moved to per-core models, which quietly rewards fewer, faster cores. A host built on 8- or 16-core CPUs with high clocks can cost meaningfully less to license than a 28-core monster that idles. Spec the hardware after you know which licensing scheme applies — on refurbished gear, swapping to the CPUs that fit costs very little.
