Dell T630 vs T640: Big Towers Compared
Dell's big towers are 2U servers wearing office clothes: full dual-socket platforms, serious drive counts, workstation-grade acoustics. The T630 (13G) and T640 (14G) bracket the same idea a generation apart, and because towers sell in smaller volume than racks, the refurbished gap between them is wider than the equivalent R730-vs-R740 spread. That gap is the whole decision.
What both towers are
Dual sockets, redundant PSUs, iDRAC, hot-plug bays behind a lockable door, and chassis engineered for rooms with people: big slow fans, sub-workstation noise at modest load. Bay flexibility is the party trick — up to 18× 3.5" or 32× 2.5" depending on configuration — making these the largest-capacity machines that do not require a rack. Both take GPUs properly (power headroom, spacing, optional GPU enablement kits), which made them quiet favorites for early ML boxes and render nodes.
The generational split
T630: E5-2600 v3/v4, 24 DIMM slots of DDR4-2400, iDRAC8, PCIe 3.0, the 13G parts pool everyone shares. T640: 1st/2nd-gen Xeon Scalable, 24 slots on six channels at up to DDR4-2933, iDRAC9, more usable NVMe paths, and ESXi 8 support — the platform advantages that define 14G everywhere else. Core ceilings: 22 vs 28. Nothing surprising; the tower inherits its generation faithfully.
How to choose
The role is storage-plus-office: a T630 stuffed with LFF drives as a small company's file/backup anchor is the classic build, and 13G pricing makes it the value answer — the workload will never miss the newer platform. The role is compute that lives outside a rack: virtualization host, GPU workstation-server hybrid, database duty — the T640's memory bandwidth, ESXi runway and iDRAC9 justify its premium, especially bought with Silver/Gold Scalable parts whose prices have softened. The budget is the constraint: T630, and spend the difference on drives and RAM; it remains one of the best capacity-per-dollar-per-decibel machines ever sold.
Tower-specific buying notes
Verify the bay configuration explicitly — tower backplanes vary more than rack ones, and an 8-bay chassis does not become an 18-bay one later without the right backplane and cage parts. Check PSU wattage against GPU ambitions (1100W units for serious accelerators). And measure the space: these are large, heavy machines — 60+ cm deep, 30+ kg loaded — that dominate whatever corner receives them. They repay it by being the rare server a small office genuinely forgets is running.
