SAN Starter: What an MSA 2050 Actually Does
Somewhere between a server full of disks and enterprise storage arrays sits the entry SAN — and the HPE MSA family has defined that middle for two decades. Refurbished MSA 2050s now cost less than the drives inside them, which makes understanding what the box actually does suddenly practical for small estates that could never justify one new.
The problem it exists to solve
Local disks bind storage to one server's fate. A SAN moves the disks into their own chassis with two controllers, each holding paths to every drive, each able to carry the whole load alone. Hosts see block LUNs over the fabric; a controller failure, cable failure or firmware update becomes a path event the hosts ride through via multipathing — not an outage. That is the entire pitch: shared block storage whose maintenance and mishaps stop being downtime.
MSA 2050 anatomy
A 2U enclosure (12LFF or 24SFF variants) with two hot-swap controller canisters, each carrying cache with backup power, four host ports per controller, and dual PSUs. Host connectivity per model: 8/16Gb Fibre Channel, 1/10GbE iSCSI, or 12Gb SAS — the SAS flavor being the quiet bargain for 2–4 host clusters, direct-attached with no switch fabric at all. Capacity grows by daisy-chaining expansion shelves; the platform's virtual storage mode pools disk groups, tiers between SSD and spinning drives automatically, and hands out thin-provisioned LUNs — genuinely modern behavior from an entry box.
Where it beats a storage server
Small virtualization clusters are the textbook case: two or three ESXi/Hyper-V/Proxmox hosts sharing MSA LUNs get live migration, HA restart and storage that survives any single failure — with less moving software than hyperconverged or ZFS-replication designs. The array's job description is narrow and it executes it with firmware, not administration: no OS to patch, no filesystem to tune, just LUNs, paths and alerts.
Where it does not
File serving (it speaks block, not SMB/NFS — a server in front provides that), object storage, and any role where one box's flexibility matters more than two controllers' availability. A TrueNAS server offers richer features per dollar — snapshots to cloud, apps, shares — at the cost of being one motherboard. The honest split: SAN for shared block under clusters; storage server for everything with a filename.
Refurbished buying notes
Verify both controllers present and matching firmware; confirm host-port type matches your plan (FC vs iSCSI vs SAS is the model, not a setting); expect SFPs to need sourcing; and check cache batteries/supercaps health in the management UI on arrival. Fed used enterprise drives and given its two paths to every host, an MSA 2050 delivers the one enterprise behavior small setups usually live without: storage that shrugs.
