Dell R620 vs R630: Moving from 12G to 13G
At the bottom of the refurbished price ladder, the R620 tempts with numbers that look like typos. One rung up, the R630 asks a modest premium. The two 1U machines look identical in a rack photo — the differences live in the memory slots, the socket, and five years of platform maturity. Whether the premium is worth paying depends on which of those you will touch.
The platform gap in concrete terms
Memory: the decisive line. R620 runs DDR3 (E5-2600 v1/v2 era, 24 slots); R630 runs DDR4 (v3/v4, 24 slots). Used DDR4 RDIMMs are cheaper per GB in practice, denser per module, faster, and — the strategic part — shared with every 13G/14G/Gen9/Gen10 machine you might own next. DDR3 is a dead-end parts pool. CPUs: v2 Ivy Bridge tops at 12 cores; v3/v4 reaches 18–22 with better IPC and idle behavior. Management: iDRAC7 vs iDRAC8 — both work; 8 is smoother, with an HTML5 console on late firmware. I/O: both are PCIe 3.0 1U machines with similar slot budgets; no drama either way.
What the R620 still does well
Single-purpose duty where its ceilings never matter: firewall/router duty, a backup verification target, a pfSense or monitoring node, cold-spare quorum member, or a first lab box where the total budget is dinner for two. A pair of E5-2650 v2s and 64GB of DDR3 runs those roles indefinitely, and the machine's parts — PSUs, fans, caddies — cost effectively nothing. The honest caveats: higher idle wattage per unit of work, an older BMC, and any money spent on DDR3 upgrades is money buried.
Why the R630 usually deserves the difference
Because the premium buys the platform you can grow: pop in cheap 32GB DDR4 sticks to 256GB, step CPUs to 2680 v4s when a workload appears, run modern hypervisors comfortably (Gen13 remains the ESXi 7 floor; the R620 fell off support earlier), and reuse every part in the next machine. Total cost over two years of light upgrading routinely favors the R630 even when the R620's sticker wins on day one.

Buy the R620 the way you buy a used appliance: for a fixed job, at a price where regret is impossible, with zero upgrade intentions. Buy the R630 the way you buy a first house: as a platform whose memory, CPUs and management will still be current parts-pool citizens years from now.
