Dell PowerEdge R750: Is 15th Gen Worth the Premium?
Refurbished buying is mostly about finding the generation whose price has collapsed while its usefulness has not. The R750 sits one step earlier on that curve: 15th-generation machines have entered the secondary market at real volume, but at prices two to three times the 14G fleet. Whether that premium is rational depends entirely on which of its upgrades your workload can feel.
What 15G actually changes
CPUs: 3rd-gen Xeon Scalable (Ice Lake-SP) — up to 40 cores per socket versus 28 on 14G, with a meaningful IPC step. Memory: eight channels per socket at DDR4-3200 (14G: six at 2933) — a ∼45% bandwidth jump when populated properly, with 32 DIMM slots total. I/O: PCIe 4.0 doubles per-lane bandwidth — twice the throughput to NVMe drives, 100GbE-class NICs and current GPUs. Storage: up to 24 front NVMe bays on the right backplane — U.2 flash as a first-class citizen rather than an add-in-card compromise. Plus iDRAC9 at its most mature.
Workloads that feel the difference
Memory-bandwidth-bound compute (scientific, in-memory analytics) scales almost linearly with those eight channels. All-flash storage tiers finally breathe: four PCIe 4.0 NVMe drives move what a whole 14G riser could. Dense consolidation counts the 40-core parts directly as capacity. GPU and 25/100GbE builds want the 4.0 lanes. If your day involves any of these, the R750 is not a luxury — it is the correct tool.
Where the R740 keeps winning
General virtualization, business applications, file and backup duty, labs: these run identically on 14G silicon, and an R740 with 2× Gold 6130 and 384GB typically costs less than a barebones R750. Same iDRAC9 management, same U.2 support on NVMe-configured R740 backplanes (fewer bays, PCIe 3.0 speeds), ESXi 8 support on both. The honest question is not whether the R750 is better — it is whether the specific improvements intersect your workload. For most refurbished buyers today, they do not yet.
If you do buy one
Populate all eight channels per socket or forfeit the platform's signature advantage — sixteen 32GB RDIMMs for 512GB dual-socket is the natural floor. Prefer NVMe-backplane configurations even if you start with two drives; that is the chassis's future. Mid-stack Ice Lake Gold parts (6338-class) carry the value; the 8380s carry the invoice. And note the running costs: idle draw and licensing both scale with what you enable.
Verdict
Buy the R750 for bandwidth, NVMe density and core count you will actually use — it delivers all three brilliantly. Buy the R740 for everything else and bank the difference; the 15G price collapse is coming, and patience is the refurbished market's oldest strategy.
