Dell R730 or HPE DL380 Gen9? A Straight Comparison
The Dell PowerEdge R730 and the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9 are contemporaries built on the same silicon: two Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors in socket LGA 2011-3, 24 DDR4 DIMM slots, four memory channels per socket, PCIe 3.0 end to end. Configure them the same way and they behave the same way. The decision is about chassis options, storage layout, management tooling and what your team already runs.
What they share
Both are 2U dual-socket machines taking the same processor families, up to 22 cores per socket with the top E5-2600 v4 parts. Both arrange 24 DIMM slots as four channels per socket with three DIMMs per channel, reach DDR4-2400 with v4 processors, and both drop the memory clock once you populate that third DIMM on each channel. Both use hot-plug redundant power supplies, hot-plug fans, 12 Gb SAS backplanes and PCIe 3.0 risers, and both want a deep rack with room behind the posts for cabling.

Drive bays and backplanes
This is the first real fork. A standard R730 takes either 8 x 3.5" or 16 x 2.5" drives up front. If you need more, Dell puts it in a different model: the R730xd carries 12 x 3.5" with a pair of 2.5" flex bays at the rear, or 24 x 2.5". HPE keeps the range inside one family, with the DL380 Gen9 SFF chassis starting at eight bays and growing to 16 and 24 through additional drive cages, and an LFF chassis holding 12 x 3.5" up front plus an optional rear cage.
Past eight direct-attached drives, both platforms need either a controller with more internal ports or a backplane with a SAS expander, and that expander uplink becomes the shared ceiling for everything behind it. With nearline spindles it rarely matters. With two dozen SSDs it matters a great deal, so count uplinks rather than bays when you are planning all-flash.
Controllers
Dell's PERC H730 and H730P bring 1 GB and 2 GB of non-volatile write cache, with the HBA330 as the pass-through option. HPE's equivalent pairing is the Smart Array P440ar with flash-backed write cache and the H240 in HBA mode. If the server is destined for vSAN, Ceph, ZFS or Storage Spaces, specify the HBA up front. A RAID controller presenting each disk as a single-drive volume is not the same thing and causes trouble later.
Expansion and accelerators
Slot counts are riser dependent: up to seven PCIe 3.0 slots on the R730 and up to six on the DL380 Gen9 in their fullest configurations. Neither spends a slot on networking, because Dell uses an rNDC and HPE a FlexibleLOM connector. Both will host two double-width accelerators given the right riser, GPU cabling kit and higher-wattage power supplies. Slot count rarely decides this purchase.
Management is the real difference
iDRAC8 with Lifecycle Controller versus iLO 4 with Intelligent Provisioning. Feature for feature they are close: remote KVM, virtual media, hardware inventory, Redfish, SNMP and syslog, with console and virtual media gated behind the top license tier on both sides.
Firmware distribution is where they diverge. Dell publishes drivers and firmware per Service Tag without a contract, and the Lifecycle Controller can pull updates from Dell's repository or one you host locally. HPE has required an active warranty or support agreement for Service Pack for ProLiant and most component firmware for years. On refurbished hardware running outside a support contract, that shapes your patching routine. Fleet tooling follows the same pattern: OpenManage Enterprise is available without a separate license, while HPE OneView requires one.
Living with either one
- Fan behavior with third-party cards. iDRAC has a documented third-party PCIe card fan response that raises fan speed for adapters it does not recognize; it is adjustable through racadm. Gen9 does something similar with unrecognized cards and drives, without a supported switch. Test noise and power draw before filling a rack with aftermarket NICs or HBAs.
- Non-OEM drives. Both platforms flag them in the management interface. Decide in advance whether your monitoring should escalate that warning.
- Boot devices. The R730 offers an internal dual SD module and an internal USB port; the DL380 Gen9 offers dual microSD, internal USB and an M.2 enablement kit. Dell's BOSS card arrived with the following generation, so do not plan around it here.
- Spares are not interchangeable. Caddies, risers, cable kits, rails and power supplies are platform specific. Standardize on one and keep a small spares shelf.
Choosing
Pick the R730 if your team already runs OpenManage, if unrestricted firmware access matters, or if 16 front SFF bays are the shape you want without moving to a different model. Pick the DL380 Gen9 if you already run ProLiant and can share spares and procedures across the fleet, or if you want 24 SFF or 12 LFF bays inside the same product family. With no incumbent platform, firmware access is usually the tiebreaker.
