HPE BL460c: What a Blade Actually Buys You

A BL460c on its own is not a server. It is a sled: two sockets, DIMM slots, two small-form-factor drive bays, mezzanine connectors and an iLO. There are no power supplies, no fans, no external network ports and no conventional PCIe slots. Everything that makes it run lives in the BladeSystem enclosure, which means the enclosure - not the blade - is the decision you are actually making.

The enclosure is the purchase

A c7000 is 10U. It holds sixteen half-height blades (the BL460c is half-height), eight full-height blades such as the four-socket BL660c, or a mix of the two. Behind the device bays sit up to six hot-plug power supplies, ten Active Cool fans, two Onboard Administrator modules for management redundancy, and eight interconnect bays. The c3000 is the 6U version: up to eight half-height blades, four interconnect bays rather than eight, and a power profile that is easier to satisfy outside a purpose-built room.

Run the numbers against the rack-mount equivalent. Sixteen 1U two-socket servers occupy 16U and bring thirty-two power cords, sixteen management drops and at least thirty-two data cables. The same thirty-two sockets in one c7000 occupy 10U with six power cords, two management uplinks, and whatever uplinks the interconnect modules need - often eight or sixteen for the entire chassis. That consolidation is the product. If you are not short on rack units, power circuits or cabling patience, you are taking on complexity for nothing.

Check the power feed first. The 2400 W Platinum supplies want a 200-240 V circuit to deliver rated output, and the enclosure has minimum fan and power-supply population rules that scale with how many device bays you fill. A c7000 is not something you plug into a 120 V office outlet and walk away from.

Two details matter more than the rest. First, sixteen DIMM slots means eight per processor. On Gen8 and Gen9 that is a clean two DIMMs per channel across four channels, so balanced populations are straightforward. On Gen10 the Xeon Scalable processors have six memory channels each, and eight slots cannot be divided evenly across six channels - the balanced population is six DIMMs per socket, one per channel, with the remaining two slots available for capacity rather than bandwidth. If you are sizing a Gen10 blade for memory throughput, plan around twelve DIMMs in the sled, not sixteen.

Second, two drive bays is a hard limit. A Gen9 blade takes a pair of SFF SAS/SATA devices behind an embedded Smart Array controller of the P244br class (P204i-b class on Gen10), or uFF M.2 carriers in an adapter if you want boot media without surrendering capacity. That is enough for a hypervisor and its scratch space. It is not enough to be a storage node, which is why blade deployments almost always assume shared storage over Fibre Channel or iSCSI. Plan the array before you plan the blades.

Networking happens in the chassis, not on the blade

Each half-height blade carries a FlexibleLOM adapter in a dedicated FLB connector - a card you select at configuration time and can replace later, not a fixed onboard NIC. Both 10 Gb and 20 Gb FlexFabric options exist across the generations, such as the 554FLB on Gen8 and the 536FLB and 650FLB on Gen9. Two mezzanine slots sit alongside it, and the midplane maps everything to fixed interconnect bays: the LOM ports reach bays 1 and 2, mezzanine 1 reaches bays 3 and 4, and mezzanine 2 reaches bays 5 through 8. Populate the bays in matched pairs and every blade you ever install inherits a redundant path. You do not cable an individual server again.

Virtual Connect is the part people underestimate. A Virtual Connect FlexFabric module lets you define a server profile - MAC addresses, WWNs, boot order, VLAN assignments - that belongs to the bay rather than to the hardware in it. Pull a failed BL460c, slide in a replacement, and the profile reapplies. Your SAN zoning, DHCP reservations and switch configuration never learn that the mainboard changed. For anyone who has spent an evening re-zoning a fabric after a hardware swap, that is the case for blades in one sentence.

What the architecture gives up

Expansion. Two mezzanine cards is the entire add-in I/O budget, there is no room for a double-wide GPU without a dedicated expansion blade, and the half-height thermal envelope caps processor selection below what the same generation supports in a 2U rack chassis - Gen9 blades top out around 145 W parts rather than the highest bins.

Granularity. Adding the seventh blade is trivial. Adding the first one is not, because it arrives with 10U of chassis, power supplies, fans and a pair of interconnect modules that only make sense once the bays are reasonably full. Below roughly six to eight nodes, discrete rack servers are usually the simpler answer.

Siting. Ten high-static-pressure fans, six power supplies and a 200-240 V feed describe a data center or a well-built colo cage, not a converted storage room.
