Most fleets never meet a four-socket server. The workloads that need one — giant in-memory databases, monolithic ERP instances, consolidation nodes where one OS must see everything — are corporate by nature, which is exactly why the machines built for them hit the refurbished market at fractions of their absurd original prices. What the platform offers

Four Xeon E5-4600 v3/v4 CPUs — up to 88 cores total — behind a fully connected QPI mesh, with 48 DDR4 DIMM slots feeding sixteen memory channels. Populated with commodity 32GB RDIMMs that is 1.5TB in a single OS image; larger modules push further. Storage runs through standard Smart Array controllers into up to 24SFF bays via the right cage options; dual 1200/1500W PSUs feed it all; iLO4 manages it like any other Gen9. The engineering achievement is thermal: four 135W sockets cooled in 2U without drama, at the cost of a fan wall that means business.

Who genuinely needs four sockets

One test: does a single process need more memory or cores than two sockets can host? In-memory analytics (SAP HANA-class footprints), huge single-instance databases, license consolidation where one big OS beats four small ones, and certain simulation codes answer yes. Everything else — VM farms included — scales out cheaper across two dual-socket machines with better failure isolation. The quad-socket buyer knows their workload by name; if you are browsing, you are probably not them.

The refurbished angle that makes it interesting

Depreciation on specialist hardware is brutal, so DL560s sell near ordinary-2U money while carrying extraordinary memory ceilings. That creates legitimate off-label uses: a terabyte-plus ZFS ARC monster, a single-node lab standing in for an entire cluster, a memory-bound research box where 1.5TB matters more than modern IPC. The recurring costs stay honest though: four populated sockets idle north of 200W, and E5-4600 parts are a narrower spares pool than their 2600 cousins — buy the machine populated, not as a project.

Buying checklist

Verify all four sockets and all intended DIMM slots are present and working (processor mezzanines and memory cartridges are the model-specific parts); insist on v4 CPUs for the memory clock and efficiency; confirm the drive cage configuration matches your plans; and budget PDU capacity like it is a small cluster — because electrically, it is. Do that, and the DL560 Gen9 delivers something no ordinary refurbished box can: a terabyte-class single system image for the price of a nice laptop.
