ML350 Gen9 vs Gen10: Tower Platform Steps

The ML350 has spent a decade being the answer to a specific brief: full dual-socket ProLiant, no rack required, quiet enough for the room where the accountant sits. Gen9 and Gen10 both honor the brief; between them sits the standard Intel platform step — and a price gap that makes the comparison worth five minutes.

The shared identity

Tower chassis with genuinely polite acoustics at office loads, dual sockets, redundant PSUs, hot-plug LFF or SFF cages that grow with kits (8 up to 24SFF, or LFF equivalents), proper PCIe expansion including GPU support on the right power configuration, and iLO for the day it misbehaves. Both generations are, mechanically, the same idea executed well: a 2U server folded into furniture.

What Gen10 changes

The familiar 14G-era list, tower edition. CPUs: E5-2600 v3/v4 (to 22 cores) gives way to Xeon Scalable 1st/2nd gen (to 28), with the Bronze/Silver/Gold ladder replacing the E5 line. Memory: four channels per socket at DDR4-2400 becomes six at up to 2933 — 24 slots feeding half again more bandwidth, the platform step that memory-hungry work actually feels. I/O and storage: cleaner NVMe options and current controller families (P408i-a class with proper HBA modes). Management: iLO5 with its faster console and Redfish maturity. Hypervisor runway: Gen10 carries ESXi 8 support; Gen9 stopped at 7 — decisive for VMware-forward shops, irrelevant for the rest.

How the decision actually falls

Gen9 wins when the role is the classic small-office anchor — files, directory, one LOB app, backups — where the four-channel platform never breathes hard and the price difference buys the drives instead. A 2× E5-2640 v4 / 64–128GB ML350 Gen9 remains one of the best value-per-decibel servers ever made. Gen10 wins when the tower is secretly a datacenter: a serious virtualization host, a database machine, a GPU box, anything memory-bandwidth-bound — or when ESXi currency and a longer platform runway justify paying forward. Buying Scalable silicon smartly (Silver 4210R, Gold 5218-class) narrows the premium considerably.

Tower-specific checks either way

Confirm the installed drive cage and backplane explicitly — tower configurations vary widely and upgrade kits have part numbers worth verifying before purchase. Match PSU wattage to GPU or full-bay ambitions. And measure the destination corner: both generations are substantial furniture. Get those right and either tower does what ML350s have always done — run a business for years while everyone forgets which cupboard it lives in.
