Xeon Scalable 1st vs 2nd Gen Explained

The Scalable era renamed everything — E5s became Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum — and then immediately complicated it with two generations sharing one socket. 14th-generation Dells and HPE Gen10s ship with either, the model numbers differ by one digit, and refurbished listings mix them freely. Here is what the second generation actually changed, and how much it should change your decision.

Reading the SKU, quickly

Four digits: the first is the tier-and-generation signal. 41xx/51xx/61xx/81xx = first generation (Skylake-SP); 42xx/52xx/62xx/82xx = second (Cascade Lake). A Silver 4110 and Silver 4210 are the same market slot, one generation apart; a Gold 6130 and 6230 likewise. Suffixes carry meaning too — most usefully R refresh parts in the 62xxR family, which delivered unusually aggressive core counts per dollar late in the platform's life.

What second generation added

Memory: DDR4-2933 on Gold/Platinum tiers versus 2666 on first gen — with six channels per socket, the bandwidth difference is measurable in memory-bound work. Support for 16Gbit DRAM also raised practical capacity ceilings. Optane PMem support: Cascade Lake can drive persistent memory modules — niche, but the only path to multi-terabyte memory footprints on this platform. Hardware mitigations: fixes for several speculative-execution vulnerabilities moved into silicon, recovering some of the performance the software patches on Skylake cost. Clocks and VNNI: modest frequency bumps tier-for-tier, plus DL Boost/VNNI instructions that accelerate int8 inference — relevant if CPU inference is on the menu.

IPC otherwise: essentially unchanged. This was a refinement generation, not an architecture jump.

What it means for a refurbished decision

The platform is identical — same R640/R740, same DL360/DL380 Gen10, same DIMMs, same BIOS families — so the choice is purely the CPU line item. Practical guidance: equal price, take second gen for the memory clock and mitigations. Meaningful price gap, first gen remains excellent — a Gold 6130 (16 cores) or Platinum 8160 at collapsed prices delivers enormous value, and most workloads never notice the generation. Hunting value deliberately: watch the 62xxR refresh parts; a 6230R carries 26 cores at prices that embarrass both generations' originals.

The compatibility caveat

Same socket does not mean blind swaps: second-gen CPUs in an early first-gen machine need a BIOS update (done, on properly refurbished stock), and Optane PMem needs specific board and BIOS support — verify before planning around it. Beyond that, treat the generation digit the way the market does: a small dial on price and memory speed, on a platform whose real virtues — six channels, 28-core ceilings, mature firmware — both generations share equally.
