Some platforms become infrastructure in the cultural sense: the machine people mean when they say a 2U server. The R730 is that machine. Sold in enormous volume through the mid-2010s, it now anchors the refurbished market — which means unmatched parts availability, thoroughly documented behavior, and pricing that makes its capabilities almost unfair.

The platform in numbers

Two LGA2011-3 sockets running Xeon E5-2600 v3/v4 — up to 22 cores per side with the right silicon. Twenty-four DDR4 DIMM slots across eight channels, with sensible ceilings far beyond what most owners fit (768GB with common 32GB RDIMMs). Seven PCIe 3.0 slots on two risers, room for GPUs within power and thermal reason, dual hot-plug PSUs from 495W to 1100W, and iDRAC8 for out-of-band management. Front-bay options define the character: 8SFF as the general-purpose default, 16SFF for flash-heavy builds, 8LFF for capacity on a budget.

What it is best at now

Virtualization: the 24 DIMM slots are the headline — 256–512GB of cheap used DDR4 turns it into a consolidation box that embarrasses new entry servers at several times the price. General business duty: file, directory, application and database roles fit with room to spare. Lab and learning: every hypervisor, every OS, every tutorial assumes hardware exactly like this. Its 2U fans keep it tolerable in a shared room — something its 1U sibling cannot claim.

Configurations that age well

The value curve favors the middle: 2× E5-2650 v4 or 2660 v4 (24–28 cores total), 256GB in eight or sixteen RDIMMs, H730 with flash-backed cache (or HBA330 for ZFS builds), dual 750W PSUs, SFP+ networking. Chase the 2699 v4 only if a specific workload counts cores for a living; the price step rarely earns its keep. For storage-leaning builds, step sideways to the R730xd rather than forcing an R730 into that role.

Honest limitations

No NVMe hot-swap bays — PCIe add-in cards are the flash path. DDR4-2400 is the memory ceiling. ESXi support ended at 7.x, so VMware-forward shops should look to 14G; Proxmox, Hyper-V and every Linux run happily onward. Idle draw of a sensible dual-CPU config sits near 90–120W — fine for office duty, worth budgeting for 24/7 home use.

The verdict that keeps being true

The R730 occupies the sweet spot refurbished buyers hunt for: old enough to be cheap, new enough to be useful, common enough that nothing about it is ever a surprise. As long as spare PSUs cost lunch money and 32GB RDIMMs cost less, this machine will keep refusing to retire — and keep being the right first answer to what should I buy?
