HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen9: Dense 1U on a Budget

The DL360 Gen9 answers a specific question: how much two-socket platform fits in 4.4 centimeters of rack? HPE's answer — all of it — made this the densest mainstream workhorse of its era and one of the most numerous machines on the refurbished market. Same silicon as the DL380 Gen9, half the height, a fraction of the price of anything newer.

Platform essentials

Dual E5-2600 v3/v4 sockets with the full range up to 22 cores each. The genuinely impressive spec: 24 DDR4 DIMM slots — identical memory capacity to its 2U sibling, so 256–512GB configurations fit in 1U without exotic modules. Storage: 8SFF up front (a 10SFF variant exists), or 4LFF for a small capacity build; Smart Array P440ar with flash-backed cache as the standard controller, H240 for HBA duty. Networking via FlexibleLOM — commonly quad 1GbE or dual 10Gb-533FLR. iLO4 handles out-of-band management, HTML5-console-capable on late firmware. Three PCIe slots (riser-dependent) cover NICs and HBAs; think twice before planning double-width accelerators in this chassis.

Where 1U density pays

Rack-space economics: colocation billed per U, branch closets with a shallow wall rack, labs stacking several nodes for cluster practice. Three DL360s occupy what one 3U tower wastes, and for compute-plus-RAM roles — hypervisor nodes, app tiers, container hosts — nothing about the thin chassis is a compromise. The 24 slots mean a single DL360 can be the memory-heavy host of a small estate.

The honest costs

Acoustics first: 1U cooling means 40mm fans, and no configuration makes them polite. This is a machine for closed doors. Expansion second: three slots and no room for big GPUs; storage tops out at eight small bays, so bulk capacity lives elsewhere. And as with all Gen9, ESXi support ended at 7.x — plan on Proxmox, Hyper-V or Linux if hypervisor currency matters.

Configurations that make sense

The balanced build: 2× E5-2650 v4, 128–256GB RDIMM, P440ar with two SSDs mirrored plus six 10K SAS, dual PSUs, 10GbE FLR. The memory node: same CPUs, 384GB+, minimal local disk, everything served from shared storage. The budget single-socket: one E5-2620 v4 and 64GB runs edge and utility roles at whisper-low cost — though never whisper-low sound.

Verdict

Buy the DL360 Gen9 for exactly what it is: maximum platform per rack unit at minimum price, with iLO4 keeping it manageable from anywhere. Give it a door to live behind and a role that fits eight bays, and it remains one of the smartest space-per-dollar purchases in refurbished hardware.
